At age 5, Messi started playing for ‘the Grandoli’, a local club coached by his father. By the time he was eight, he was playing for Newell’s Old boys. The group was immensely talented, which was visible from the fact that they lost just a single match in the four year run period – the group was popularly known as “the machine of ’87” just for their sheer interest and talent for the game. Despite Lionel Messi being immensely talented he was not offered help by the local clubs – River Plate were also interested in messi – who in fact were not willing to pay for his treatment. Barcelona Sporting Director Carles Rexach watched him play, offered him a trial at FC Barcelona – impressed offered Lionel a contract (written in paper Napkin!) which included paying for messi’s treatment in Spain. At Age 13, Messi crossed the Atlantic with his father Jorge Messi to Barcelona, Spain, and was immediately enrolled at prestigious FC Barcelona youth academy.

Messi kick-started in 2000 when he joined the Under 14s, making spectacular progress as he climbed the age ranks of the different youth team and then Barça C, followed by Barça B and the first team in record time.

“Within a short span, he became the only player to play for five different teams.”

It was in the 2003/2004 season he made his first-team debut – aged 16 – in a friendly with Porto –  that marked the unveiling of the new Dragao Stadium. His first official match appearance was in Barcelona’s derby win against RCD Espanyol (0 – 1) at the Olympic Stadium in October 16, 2004.

With first team players seriously injured, the services of several reserve teams players were called upon, and Lionel became a regular feature of Barca squads. On May 1, 2005, he became the youngest player ever to score a league goal for FC Barcelona – against Albacete Balompié when Messi was only 17 years, 10 months and 7 days old (the record was beaten by Bojan Krkić).
